Soul food and a six-piece soul band? We can’t think of a more satisfying combination—which is why we spent last Friday night watching St. Paul and the Broken Bones at Stubbs BBQ in Austin.
Their setlist for the evening included a plethora of jazzy tunes like “Waves” and “Sanctify” from their newest release, Sea of Noise. Lead singer Paul Janeway has an incredibly passionate voice, and puts soul and flare into every song he performs. He must have taken a few notes from James Brown, because the singer dances just as enthusiastically when he’s belting out tracks onstage.
The highlight of the show? When Janeway continued to sing while crawling underneath the bandstand, becoming completely hidden from the crowd. Moments later, he crawled out, ripped the carpet off the floor before throwing over his shoulders like a cape.
The group ended the night with an incredible five-song encore—a wonderful surprise after an already amazing performance. The audience left will full hearts and stomachs, and we bet they’ll be talking about this show for weeks to come. Be sure to Track St. Paul and the Broken Bones on Bandsintown, so you can catch them in your city sometime soon!
