With their Bowie-inspired glam, innovative stage presence, and self-described space blues/desert disco sound, KOLARS are true originals in the scene. The husband-and-wife duo (and newly dubbed Big Break artists) have redefined what it means to be a modern rockstar, making music equally fit for screaming along in cars or moshing at their concerts.
One of their latest singles, “Turn It Up,” is a swinging banger with just enough classic touches (i.e. old-school vocal distortions and intermittent guitar riffs) to carry their modern lyricism and drums. The video is fittingly trippy and gritty, with band members Rob Kolars and Lauren Brown navigating their way through a computer generated dystopian world, complete with assembly lines, giant robots, and space portals. After the original director for the video dropped the project, KOLARS reached out to Mexico City-based director Sesio Medina. The band never met Medina in person, but Rob said, “Thanks to Instagram and modern technology we were able to get him the footage and correspond remotely for about a month to make this video happen. It’s great to collaborate with someone from another country and get a unique perspective on our music and ideas." As dark as it is fun, the visuals are the perfect complement to KOLARS’ raw sound.
