Punk rockers Baby Shakes have been on a mission to revive the grime and gruel of the early New York punk scene since the beginning of their musical journey. With their determination and power-packed repertoire, they’re already heading in the right direction.
Members Mary Blount (lead vocals, guitar), Judy Lindsay (lead guitar, vocals), Claudia Gonzalez (bass, vocals), and Ryan McHale (drums) exude an energy unlike any in their weight class. Despite their close sonic and aesthetic connection to classic riot-grrl acts such as The Runaways or Siouxsie and the Banshees, they’ve managed to add a fresh perspective to the punchy, garage rock of the era, following in their predecessors’ footsteps while adding their own twist.
Their new record, Cause a Scene, is due to hit shelves on September 20, and it’s impending arrival has fans banging on pots and pans in riotous anticipation. While we wait to hear the greatness they’ve got in store for us, we found out the acts and genres that inspired the members of Baby Shakes to head down the path that they have. With that in mind, they’ve compiled a playlist of songs from artists that have influenced them thus far—check it out below!
Tom Petty is our hero! We channel his slick, rebellious attitude when writing lyrics and we really admire his F-you renegade spirit. He did things his own way and stood up for the underdogs. This is an early Heartbreakers song; it’s the jam!!!
This song gets us in the mood to party. It’s the perfect boot stompin’ glam rock anthem.
[He’s] one of our biggest inspirations when it comes to guitar riffs.
We love this band so much and feel such a connection with them. Their songs are so catchy and fun which is what we strive for!!!
This song is so epic!!!!! It’s the kinda tune that you blast at the beginning or end of the night and all your friends join in to help you hit those high opera notes in the chorus. We all just sound like howling dogs trying to out bark each other. You can say it’s kinda like our version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in that car scene from Wayne’s World.
“Then the girls came, with their long hair, high heels and their make up never quite right”- best lyrics; it feels like they’re singing to us (lol). Such cool atmosphere. We wanna be there, in Brickfield, too!!!
Because where would we be without the Ramones? (We pose that question to ALL punk bands around the world in the history of music!!!) Too many good songs to choose from, but this is one of our faves (and it was a regular cover for us on tour for a while).
[This is a] great song to listen to when getting dressed and getting ready to play a show. Makes us dance around and sing. Good warm up, too :)
We listened to this band soooo much on our first tour; makes us really nostalgic.
[This is] such an anthem; best lyrics ever!!!! This song is the perfect mix of rock ‘n’ roll and country with wild, psychedelic guitar.
[This song] makes you wanna bop up down and all around. Such a powerful band, such great musicians!!!
So fun!!!! Glam rock party song!!!!
“Garageland” makes us want to keep writing more songs!! It really captures the rock ’n’ roll spirit!
Baby Shakes have bigs things ahead of them, including a few dates across the pond and a hometown record release show on September 20. Keep up to date with them via social media and their website to see when they might be coming to a city near you!
