Photo Gallery: Gordi’s Epic North American Run
We caught the Aussie’s shows in Detroit and Chicago.REVIEW
The title of Gordi’s latest album, Reservoir, serves a dual purpose. On the surface it’s the evocative title that encapsulates the eleven meaningful tracks, but the soulful singer also views it as an emotional headspace of retreat. The reservoir is where she goes to think, where she escapes to, and where she fulfills her needs as a songwriter with something real to say. The LP is an exploration of loss, acceptance, and it is as true a representation of the indie pop artist as anything she’s ever released. From upbeat and soaring moments like “On My Side” to the introspective and resonating melody of “Can We Work It Out”, the 2017 LP masterfully spans the full range of human emotion.
Though it’s easy to get lost in the unique production and harmonies found in these tracks, the Aussie’s greatest strength is her lyrics. “Lyrics to me are everything,” says Gordi. “Music is kind of what encases this story that you’re trying to tell. The music is obviously what makes people fall in love with a song first, but what eventually speaks to people, whether they know it or not, is the actual words that are being said.”
Gordi just finished an North American tour where she supported S. Carey in more ways than one—by being in his band and opening for him. Their 18-date run kicked off in his hometown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and wrapped on April 7 in Minneapolis. We followed her from Detroit to Chicago to see how she stayed energized despite playing two shows a night.
