12 Iconic Lollapalooza Sets To Get You Pumped For August

If you’re the kind of music fanatic who stans for every genre out there, Lollapalooza is the festival for you. From pop to country to hip-hop, Chicago’s biggest event of the summer is the place to be in August, as 2018's lineup is boasting can't-miss sets from artists like The Weeknd, Camila Carbello, Tyler, The Creator, Galantis, Luke Combs, and Arctic Monkeys.
To get us pumped for the day we can finally charge the gates at Grant Park, we rounded up of some of the most iconic Lollapalooza performances over the years. 1. Outkast - 2014 |
Whether you grew up listening to Outkast or are the kind of person who belts the lyrics to “Hey Ya” any chance you get, there’s no denying that the hip-hop duo has the ability to put anyone in a good mood. Big Boi and Andre 3k gave the fans the reunion they’d been waiting for, and we’ll remember this one forever— forever, ever. Forever ever.
2. The Killers - 2017 |
It’s pretty crucial to note that The Killers released their first single, "Mr.Brightside", back in 2003, yet somehow we’re spellbound by it still every time we hear it live.. Also—we’re absolutely swooning over lead singer Brandon Flowers’ ability to sound even better live than he does on their records. How does he do it?!
3. Kings of Leon - 2014 |
Kings of Leon had the honor of headlining the festival in 2014 and they definitely lived up to expectations. Before closing out with their power anthem “Sex on Fire” they surprised us with a cover of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own”, making sure their set would go down in history.
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - 2016 |
For a band this iconic, it is no surprised that the Red Hot Chili Peppers put on a show that will stand the test of time generations to come. Fans in attendance truly felt as if they were a part of something bigger than themselves while in this crowd, as they could be heard roaring at every note and riff as if every song is their favorite. We call that the RHCP effect.
5. Pearl Jam - 2007 |
It’s no coincidence that Pearl Jam are one of the best rock bands out there because their 2007 Lolla show absolutely blew us away. This will remain one of those sets that will be talked about for years to come. If watching this video blows your mind, imagine being there live.
6. Radiohead - 2016 |
Radiohead are considered one of the most legendary bands of all time—one whose sound has shaped the direction of music for various artists and genres. We’d categorize this performance as otherworldly, based on the combination of the mystical lights and their eerily beautiful sound that constantly leaves us in awe.
7. Paul McCartney - 2015 |
If there is anyone who can headline a festival and wow the crowd at the age of 73 it’s Paul McCartney. The Beatles luminary gave us chills as he performed heartwarming classics like “Let It Be”, “Blackbird”, and “Hey Jude”, uniting fans of all ages.
8. Foo Fighters - 2011 |
Mother nature brought the special effects to this unbelievable set—we’re talking torrential downpour. However, fans didn’t care that the rain was coming down hard, because it made the Foo Fighters’ performance all the more epic.
9. Chance The Rapper - 2017 |
There is no better time and place to see this iconic Chicago-born rapper than during his biggest year yet, in his hometown. From serenading the crowd during slower songs such as “Juke Jam” and “Same Drugs” to bringing the heat with “No Problem” and “All Night”, Chance brought the coloring book to life with his 2017 set.
10. Childish Gambino - 2014 |
He’s a singer, comedian, actor, and his 2014 Lollapalooza performance showed us that he’s also an all-star performer. Gambino’s infectious stage presence made us want to hop onstage with him as he performed hits like “3005” and “Heartbeat”.
11. Florence + The Machine - 2012 |
Florence + The Machine have a unique sound that eludes any generational classification—it’s truly timeless. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing lead Vocalist Florence Welch live knows that she radiates positive energy.
12. Daft Punk - 2007 |
If you’ve ever had the honor of seeing the elusive, yet emblematic electronic group live, you’re one of the lucky ones. Lollapalooza 2007’s lineup was one of the best in the festival’s history, and the enigma that is Daft Punk still managed to stand out.
